But compliance officers know that regulatory interpretation requires understanding the intent behind rules, not just their text. The real danger is not that AI gets things completely wrong. The danger is that it gets things subtly wrong in ways you cannot interrogate, and by the time you notice, the policy is live or the audit has begun.

Verify Every Regulatory Interpretation Against Primary Sources

That interpretation may fit the most common reading, but it may miss the specific intent of your regulator or the way your jurisdiction has applied the rule in practice. Before you rely on any AI regulatory output, trace it back to the original regulation, recent regulatory guidance, and decisions from your specific supervisor. This is not extra work. This is the work you are paid to do.

Recognise When AI Risk Assessments Miss Jurisdiction-Specific Context

But they cannot know the enforcement priorities of your specific regulator this year, the informal guidance your supervisor gave you in a meeting, or the way your jurisdiction interprets ambiguous rules differently from other regions. Your job is to catch the gaps that AI cannot see because it has not sat through the conversations you have sat through. Add a manual step after every AI risk assessment: ask yourself what enforcement action your regulator has actually taken in the past year that the AI did not mention.

Examine the Assumptions Embedded in AI-Drafted Policies

ChatGPT and Copilot can draft policy language that reads like it came from a compliance professional. The sentences are clear. The structure is logical. But policies are decisions about risk tolerance, not just templates. An AI policy might assume your organisation accepts a higher compliance cost to avoid a low-probability risk, or vice versa. It might embed assumptions about how your internal teams operate or what your business model allows. You must read every AI-drafted policy as if someone else wrote it, and ask whether it reflects your actual risk appetite and constraints.

Keep Your Own Regulatory Instinct Sharp While Using AI Tools

The longer you rely on AI to interpret regulations and assess risks, the weaker your own ability to spot when the AI is wrong becomes. Your regulatory instinct is not mystical. It comes from reading rules repeatedly, sitting through supervisor meetings, and noticing patterns in enforcement over time. If you outsource this entirely to AI, you lose the ability to question it. Set a rhythm where you still engage directly with core regulations in your area without using AI translation. Read at least one recent enforcement action or examination report per month without AI summarisation. This keeps your own judgement sharp enough to interrogate the tool.

If you tell them an AI tool drafted the policy but you did not verify key sections, you have created a liability, not a shortcut. You need a clear record of what came from AI, what you changed, and what you verified independently. This is not just for audits. This is for the moment when something goes wrong and you need to show that you exercised professional judgement, not just generated documents. Create a simple log for every significant compliance output: date, source, what the AI generated, what you changed, and what you verified.
