Compliance officers often treat AI regulatory outputs as verified interpretations rather than first drafts requiring expert review. This pattern leads to embedded errors in policy, risk assessments, and audit findings that compound across multiple regulatory domains.
These are observations, not criticism. Recognising the pattern is the first step.
Thomson Reuters AI summaries are trained on legal databases but cannot account for recent regulatory amendments or jurisdiction-specific enforcement patterns your regulator has adopted. A compliance officer may base a policy change on a summary that misses a critical modification issued three weeks ago.
The fix
After receiving an AI summary of a regulatory requirement, always read the source regulation from your regulator's official website and check the publication date against your last review.
Lexis+ AI prioritises changes by volume and recency, not by impact to your specific organisation. A small but critical change to reporting thresholds in one jurisdiction may receive lower visibility than a larger amendment in a jurisdiction where you have minimal exposure.
The fix
Set up manual alerts through your regulator's notification service for each jurisdiction where you operate, and cross-reference AI-generated change reports against these alerts monthly.
ChatGPT generates plausible-sounding interpretations based on training data, but it cannot access your regulator's enforcement history or internal guidance that reveals what they actually intend. Your organisation could spend resources on compliance with an interpretation that conflicts with how your regulator actually enforces the rule.
The fix
When a regulation is ambiguous, contact your regulator's compliance helpline or review published enforcement decisions and guidance documents before accepting any AI interpretation.
Copilot can generate comparison tables that look complete but may group requirements in ways that obscure critical differences. A requirement that appears equivalent in both jurisdictions may have different timing, scope, or exemptions that Copilot has not flagged.
The fix
After Copilot creates a comparison, map each requirement back to its source regulation and note the specific section for each jurisdiction, then flag any requirement with different definitions or scopes for legal review.
If your regulator questions why your organisation interpreted a rule in a particular way, saying 'ChatGPT told us' creates liability rather than defence. Your regulator expects interpretations to be grounded in published guidance, enforcement history, or expert analysis.
The fix
Document the reasoning behind each interpretation by citing the specific regulation, published guidance, or external expert advice, and treat AI summaries as reference material only, not as your audit trail.
KPMG Clara and similar tools assess risk based on industry-wide data, not your specific regulatory footprint or historical regulator behaviour in your jurisdictions. An assessment may rate a certain risk as low across your sector when your particular regulator has recently escalated enforcement in that area.
The fix
For each risk rated low or medium by AI, verify that assessment by checking your regulator's enforcement actions from the past two years and any recent regulatory statements about enforcement priorities.
AI prioritisation tools rank policies by historical violation frequency and financial impact, but they cannot predict which gaps will matter most to your specific regulator during your next inspection. A policy ranked as lower priority may be one your regulator has signalled as an audit focus.
The fix
Cross-reference AI-generated audit priorities against your regulator's recent public statements, guidance publications, and any examiner feedback from peer organisations in your sector.
AI audit reports are only as accurate as the underlying data fed into them. If your compliance data is incomplete, duplicated, or dated, the AI report will present a confident picture of readiness that does not match reality.
The fix
Before sharing any AI-generated audit readiness report, manually verify that the data inputs are current, complete, and traceable to your actual compliance records.
Reputational risks, regulatory relationship risks, and implementation risks are harder to quantify, so AI tools often downplay them or omit them entirely. Your organisation may face a risk that was never assessed because it did not fit the AI's measurement model.
The fix
After receiving an AI risk assessment, explicitly add a section for qualitative risks, including regulator relations, implementation complexity, and third-party dependencies that the AI tool cannot score numerically.
AI work plans generate standard sample sizes and testing procedures based on general audit practice, not the control failures your organisation has experienced or the regulator's known testing approach. Your testing may be mathematically sound but fail to address the specific control weaknesses you actually carry.
The fix
Have your internal audit or external audit team review and adjust any AI-generated work plan to include targeted testing around control failures from your last audit and known regulator preferences.
AI-written policies contain unstated assumptions about your business model, risk tolerance, and operating environment. A policy may assume manual processes where you have automation, or vice versa, creating gaps between policy and practice that auditors will find.
The fix
For each AI-drafted policy, extract and list the key assumptions about your organisation, then walk through the policy with operational staff to confirm each assumption is accurate.
Copilot generates policy language based on industry best practice and regulatory templates, not your specific control environment. The policy may describe controls that sound good but do not match what your organisation actually does or can realistically do.
The fix
After AI drafts policy language, have the control owner walk through each procedure described and note any step that differs from actual practice, then revise the policy to match reality.
AI definitions of key terms like 'customer', 'transaction', or 'material risk' are based on general usage and training data, not your regulator's specific definitions in their guidance or rules. Your policy may fail audit because your definitions conflict with how your regulator defines the same term.
The fix
For each critical definition in an AI-drafted policy, search your regulator's published guidance, rules, and enforcement actions for their definition, and align your policy language to match.
Control matrices generated by AI tools often include standard controls based on the policy topic, but these controls may not exist in your organisation. An auditor will find the policy describes controls that are not actually performed.
The fix
Verify that every control listed in an AI-generated control matrix exists in your organisation by having the control owner confirm they perform it, or remove the control from the policy.
ChatGPT generates training content based on general compliance best practice, but it does not know what your regulator expects from employee training or what gaps they have noted in past examinations. Your training may be compliant but miss the specific areas your regulator cares most about.
The fix
Review your last regulatory examination report and any regulator guidance on training expectations, then ensure your AI-drafted training content specifically addresses the areas your regulator has highlighted.
AI-drafted policies often lack clear ownership language, leaving ambiguity about who is responsible for implementation and when the policy will be reviewed. Without accountability, a policy can drift away from practice and become audit risk.
The fix
Add a section to every AI-drafted policy that names the specific role responsible for implementation, sets a review date no more than one year away, and requires documented sign-off on any deviations from the policy.
