Inworld AI and procedural generation tools produce competent but safe level layouts that work mechanically but lack the unusual geometry, sight lines, or pacing that made classic games memorable. The levels feel optimised rather than authored.

Use AI to generate base layouts, then spend time deliberately breaking them: add tight corridors, bad sightlines, and asymmetry that makes your level feel intentional.

Inworld AI produces dialogue and behaviour that sounds natural but follows predictable patterns because the tool optimises for engagement, not surprise. Players notice they have heard these response patterns in other games using the same tool.

The fix

Play through NPC interactions yourself and identify moments where the AI chose the obvious response, then write variant dialogue that contradicts expectations.

Running a level generator without tight design parameters produces variety but wastes space and creates unintended difficulty spikes. You get more levels than you can balance because the tool generated them all at once.

Judgement and Ownership Mistakes

Add comments above all AI-generated code explaining the problem it solves and constraints it respects, as if teaching another developer.

Midjourney and DALL-E produce visually consistent character sets and environments, so teams assume consistency equals quality. The game looks polished but lacks the intentional visual surprises and hierarchy that guide player attention.

The fix

Check if your AI-generated assets are consistent because they serve the game's design, or just consistent because the tool made them that way.

Instead of deciding whether a boss should be fast and weak or slow and strong, you ask ChatGPT for balance parameters and ship whatever it suggests. The boss works but feels like it was designed by averages, not intention.

The fix

Make the design decision yourself (what does this boss teach the player?), then use AI only to implement that specific vision.
