Require Clinical Teams in Every AI Procurement Decision

Your Microsoft Azure Health or Google Health AI purchase decisions happen in finance and operations meetings. Clinicians see the tool after it goes live and must work around it. This order is backwards and creates the gap between promised efficiency and actual safety. Clinical teams know where the real bottlenecks are and where AI can help without replacing human judgement. They also know which decisions cannot be offloaded to an algorithm because they depend on context, experience, and pattern recognition that AI cannot replicate.

Challenge AI Savings Projections Before You Budget Them

Your IBM Watson Health vendor promises a 15 percent reduction in staff time through better resource allocation. You budget for this saving. Six months later, you have not reduced staff because clinicians are using the saved time to catch errors the AI system missed, or to manage exceptions the algorithm cannot handle. Your actual saving is 2 percent. You have already committed the money elsewhere. The problem is that vendor projections do not account for the real cost of deskilling. When staff stop making certain judgements, they get worse at making them. When they need to intervene because the AI failed, they struggle.

Design Governance That Bridges the Operational and Clinical Gap

Your current governance treats AI as an operational tool. It sits in IT governance, not clinical governance. When something goes wrong, no one owns it because it is not classified as a clinical decision. This gap is where harm grows quietly. You need a governance structure that treats AI as a tool that affects clinical outcomes, even when it is technically managing operations. You need a deliberate programme to document and preserve the operational wisdom your experienced staff hold before it is lost to automation.
