Before implementing any AI recommendation that affects patient flow or staffing, ask your most experienced ward manager whether it matches what they know about your actual operations. If it does not, find out why the AI is missing that knowledge.
Separate the AI implementation from the business case evaluation. Run both your old process and the AI recommendation in parallel for three months before deciding. Do not let enthusiasm for cost savings prevent you from seeing real harms.
Create a clinical governance review for any AI tool that affects how decisions are made about patients, even if vendors classify it as operational. Patient safety does not fit neatly into operational versus clinical categories.
Set a trigger point now for stopping an AI implementation. Decide in advance what metrics would tell you to revert to your previous process, and commit to checking them every month.
Ask your staff directly whether the AI is making their work feel safer or faster but in a fragile way. They will know things your data cannot show you yet.
